‘Lost Wax’ Exhibition in Venice
Venice – Lunardelli has been a delight to collaborate with for my recent exhibition of Bronze Sculptures and Paintings. Having a forum to tell our Chickasaw and Choctaw stories to international visitors and art lovers has been incredible. Native art has always been contemporary during its time of creation, the storytelling, creation, and culture have been passed down for 1000s and 1000s of years. It’s the inspiration and reference point within my work to tell these stories, a continuation of this very tradition and heart.
The bronze sculptures are figurative by composition with heavy aspects of abstraction. The abstraction of the compositions give-way to traditional patterns in conjunction with the very tactile material of beadwork. Both material and pattern are written within a historical context and are equally as modern as today. Making it timeless. The figurative focus shows are diversities, a combination of referenced community members and ones of imagination. They give a face to who we are today, in the now. The brilliance of the patina work of the bronze is taking the material out of context. Showing it has a turquoise stone, with each one being unique. The initial clay work has its brushed texture, giving its connection to the paintings - details are left in a suggested manner. Hard lines are removed, blocks of color, blocks of movement, and blocks of features all dance together with gestural brushwork. In contrast to the cooler tones of stoneware for the sculptures, the paintings are much richer and warmer with their color palettes. Splashes of pinks, lemon yellows, and tangerines are intermixed throughout the mid-tones and highlights giving a glowing presence to the portraits.
