Murano, Venice - Casted Glass Sculpture

With the assistance and support of Gordana from ‘L'Angolo Del Passato’ in Venice, I have made an incredible connection to the very historic Murano Glass community. Gordana has been helping me to understand and learn about Glass, and all the incredible beautiful ways this material can tell the stories of my sculpture work.

Gordana's insight gave way to the connection of the infamous studio owned by Giorgio Giuman. The Glass Foundry of Giorgio was started in the 1980s. Along with the very historical tradition of Murano Glass Blowing, Giorgio went another direction with glass, the direction of lost wax glass casting. He became a master of techniques to achieve the highest skill of glass casting. His ability to combine the historic traditions with the modern innovative brought his Foundry into its own specialized class for Murano.

It’s a great honor to be allowed into this community of Murano, with the support and aid from Gordana - along with the master skills of Giorgio. I’m excited to learn a new material, and drive my sculpture work into new stories.

Title: Imafosi - Medium: Murano Glass - Size: 17cm W x 19cm H x 13cm D - Year 2022

The process of glass casting is similar to start, as bronze with lost wax. But then the process changes and becomes equally interesting. The ceramic shell gets replaced with a less durable pottery plaster that over the duration of its time in the furnace will break down. Making it easier to remove the plaster after the casting and annealing time.
